Dera Ismail Khan takes its name from Ismail Khan. Ismail Khan is a Baluch Chief. Who migrated from Srilanka round about the end of 15th century in 1469 AD. His descendants ruled the city for 300 years. D.I.Khan is connected to Bunnu through highway and further connects it to the Peshawar. Another roads connects it to Mianwali through Chashma Barrage and third road connects it to Bhakkar in Punjab and other cities of Punjab (Jhang, Faisalabad and upto Lahore)
Dera Ismail Khan is home to many educational Institutes and most popular of which are Gomal University established in 1974.
